Sensing technology may be the finest route towards Olympic success
September 18, 2008 01:50 PM PDT
The last decade has seen a huge expansion of interest in sensing technology and the development of devices, which have a number of uses in both the clinical and the sporting world. Scientists at Imperial College London have developed a wireless ear worn sensor as part of their research. The device measures the body’s movement and transmits this information to a nearby computer, where dimensions, such as posture, changes in movement, and calculations, such as temperature, can be calculated. These are vital when judging an athletes performance or for example when monitoring an older person in their home. The scientists presented their results in June 2008 at the Body Sensor Networks Conference in Hong Kong. Back at Imperial they informed me what these new developments were all about. |
